Floating solar for ponds and reservoirs
PowerModule™ is Sunsurf’s floating solar system for ponds, reservoirs, leachate ponds, wetlands and lakes – enabling energy production on surfaces where traditional technology cannot be used.
PowerModule™ is built with more than a metre of clearance above the water. This lets light through, creates natural airflow beneath the modules and cools the components effectively, contributing to longer life, higher performance and minimal impact on photosynthesis in the water.
The frame is made of corrosion-resistant aluminium and rests on UV-stabilised HDPE pontoons, with a technical lifetime of 40 years. The units come as PowerModule™ and PowerModuleDuo™ and hold 3–6 solar panels. All assembly takes place on land and no groundwork is needed.

Features
Robust aluminium structure
Frame in corrosion-resistant aluminium from Nordic raw materials, processed in Sweden.
Higher output
Up to 15% higher energy production than ground-mounted solar parks, thanks to bifacial panels and reflection from the water.
Airy design
Designed to optimise cooling of the solar cells, both through airflow and the natural cooling effect of the water.
Service and maintenance
Components are easy to maintain thanks to smart system design and an integrated walkway.
Orientation for maximum output
Available in two variants: south-facing and east–west.
Low restoration cost
Simple, smooth restoration at the end of the system’s life.
Modular design
The systems can be adapted to the shape of the pond, the required output and the optimal orientation.
Flexible mooring
FlexibleMooringSystem™ keeps the system in place and manages water level variations of more than 6 metres.
Technical durability
A technical lifetime of 40 years for the frame.
Fast installation
Designed for simple, fast installation, completely pile-free.
Up to 15% higher energy production
PowerModule™ comes in two variants: south-facing and east–west. Depending on the variant, the system delivers a power density of 1.7–2 MW per hectare, making it a space-efficient alternative to ground-mounted solar parks.
The airy design, combined with bifacial solar panels, captures sunlight both directly from above and indirectly via reflections from the water and the surrounding aluminium and steel surfaces. This optimised light capture, together with the water’s natural cooling of the panels, can give up to 15% higher energy production than conventional ground-mounted solar parks.

Handles snow loads up to 2.5 kN/m²
The systems are designed to withstand the harshest Nordic climate conditions. The structure and anchoring are dimensioned to Eurocode and DNV-RP-0584, DNV’s guideline for floating solar, and the pontoons are configured for the site’s snow, wind and wave loads.
This means a reliable solution all year round – whatever the snow, wind or ice loads. Because the systems are completely pile-free, installation is fast and cost-effective.

Mooring adapted to every pond
The mooring is compatible with several different solutions. For smaller installations, Sunsurf has its own patented mooring system, FlexibleMooringSystem™, and for larger installations at MW scale we work closely with partners to anchor the systems.
The capacity, number and type of anchor points are determined in a project-specific mooring analysis. It is the pond that decides: the size and location of the installation, how much the water level varies, what the slopes and walls look like and the conditions on the bottom.
The mooring handles loads from 25 kN per anchor point, for smaller systems or layouts with many anchor points, up to 100 kN for larger systems with fewer anchor points.

Built where nothing else can be built.
- Water
- Landfills
- Peatland
- Industrial ponds
We build on land that is already in use, without competing with farming, forests or housing.
Suppliers
Our suppliers are based in the Nordic region, which means short supply chains, high quality and a low climate impact.
Aluminium
Both PowerModule™ and PeatModule™ are made of aluminium for a long life, low weight and high corrosion resistance – stable and durable even in demanding environments such as leachate ponds, landfills and peatland.
The aluminium comes from Nordic raw materials and is processed in Sweden. Manufacturing is done in close cooperation with suppliers certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
HDPE
The pontoons in both systems are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) by suppliers certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. HDPE is corrosion-resistant, suits both fresh and salt water and is highly resistant to UV radiation, mechanical impact and chemicals.
The pontoons are made from recycled HDPE in Finland – a circular choice of material for sustainable production.
How we develop the technology
I spent nine years working on offshore technology, including HVDC platforms, offshore wind and wave power in the Nordic climate. We apply the same design standards to our floating and pile-free solar modules, with quality all the way through, from calculation to physical delivery.
The power market is challenging for everyone who wants to build renewables, so a solar park has to last for decades with low operating costs. That is why our systems have few moving parts, durable materials and a strong structure, and all maintenance is done easily from the walkway.
No two sites are alike. Whether it is a leachate pond, a reservoir or peatland, we start from the conditions on site and adapt the design when the installation has unique needs.
We can do that thanks to close collaboration with our Nordic suppliers. It gives us high quality and short supply chains, and lets us keep developing the technology together.
